Are You Ready to Retire?

June 11, 2024

I've received hundreds of questions from clients over the years about retirement. But, of course, the most common one is "When can I retire?"

However, we must address a few others that are just as important before we can answer this question.

Here's the first one: How long do you want to continue working?

For some, retirement is an age at which you can end your work life. However, if you love your job, designating a retirement age may not be on your radar. Still, others might decide to continue working…but work less.

How do your health, energy, focus, and motivation affect your retirement age decision?

Instead of picking a retirement age, start with a broad range. Here's an example:

If you are under 40 years of age, designate a 10-year window you prefer to retire.

If you are 40 – 50 years of age, evaluate and narrow the range to a 5-Year window.

If you are 50 – 60 years of age, evaluate and narrow the range to a 2 – 3 year window.

If you are over 60, start thinking about a 1-year window.

Picking a range of years will allow you to consider the relevant factors along the way and not rush to the finish line before you are ready.
